The November 12th Neck of the Woods Performance Series features the following artists:

Richard Krawiec: Acclaimed Raleigh writer, Richard Krawiec, will be reading from “She Hands Me the Razor, “ which is his second book of poems. The book has been described by Kathryn Stripling Byer, (former North Carolina Poet Laureate) as “an edgy and satisfying marriage of tenderness and well-honed attentiveness to the connections, often fraying, among people and the various places in which they find themselves, both physically and emotionally.”   Krawiec’s first book of poems, entitled “Breakdown,” was a finalist for a minor award. His work appears in dozens of magazines, including Shenandoah, Sou’wester, Many Mountains Moving, Witness, and Cream City Review. In addition to poetry, Krawiec has published two novels, a story collection, and four plays.  Mr. Krawiec has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the NC Arts Council (twice), and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.  He currently teaches online Fiction Writing for UNC Chapel Hill, and won their Excellence in Teaching Award for 2009. Mr. Krawiec is also founder of Jacar Press, a community active publishing company.

Saints Apollo: Saints Apollo is a new indy/folk/pop group that plays original music characterized by warm, rich harmonies. The band is comprised of Jonathan Koo (guitar), Autumn Brand (violin), Kaitlin Grady (cello), and Rachel Broadbent (piano). Although they have only been playing together for about six months, Saints Apollo has been selected as an “Indy Pick” by The Independent, and has produced their first EP, at K House Recording, which is available in online stores such as iTunes and Amazon. Koo is the primary songwriter for the group, but the foursome works collaboratively on the instrumentals and vocal arrangements. Their organic sound grows out of vocals that explore the nuances of harmony, and instrumentation that is simple and honest.

Stephanie Davis and Helen Foyle of Rainbow Dance Company: Stephanie Davis is a senior in high school who has been dancing with her family at Arts Together since she was about three years old.  This is her eighth year performing with the Rainbow Dance Company, Arts Together’s multi-age modern dance ensemble. She loves choreographing and throwing moves – and people – around! Her plans for the future include starting her own non-profit community just like the one that she grew up in.  Helen Foyle is a freshman at Enloe High School . She has been at Arts Together since she was four, finding her passion in modern dance. Helen has been performing with the Rainbow Dance Company since she was nine years old. In her free time she enjoys spending time with friends and sleeping.

Phatbread: Phatbread is Raleigh’s newest jam band, covering the sounds and music of some of the greatest bands in the genre such as The Grateful Dead,Pink Floyd, and Widespread Panic. Tom Fougerousse’s powerful vocals and smooth bass lines are punctuated by a percussive duo that includes Rob Peele on drum set and Justin Barnett on percussion. Derek Engi rounds out this four-piece band with amazing guitar licks and rhythmic stylings sure to make your body move and your soul shine. You can learn more about them on their facebook page.

The Neck of the Woods Performance Series is a monthly performance event that showcases the work of local performing artists. On the second Saturday of the month, residents of Wake Forest and environs are invited to enjoy this informal affair which offers an eclectic mix of performances by diverse artists working in varied disciplines, including but not limited to: dance, theater, music, visual art, poetry/spoken word, comedy, and conceptual art. The Neck of the Woods series was started with the intention of creating a forum for creative spirits to dialogue, collaborate, perform and witness works, and to spice up the nightlife in Wake Forest. Performers need not have a “finished,” or “polished” piece — indeed, improvisational and experimental approaches to art-making are encouraged. The Neck of the Woods series is especially interested in nurturing the creative energy around Wake Forest, but the event draws artists from all over the area.
